El Rey del Mundo Tainos

A discontinued treasure.

El Rey del Mundo is Spanish for “king of the world,” and this cigar brand dates back to the mid 1800s. It once had a vast array of sizes, from the diminutive to the grand, but today it’s been whittled down to a mere two. This Taino, a Churchill, is among the many sizes that are no longer made. It’s a delicate Cuban that burns dead even, with a superb draw. The smoke is mellow with a persistent toasty quality that hints of briny olives. Light notes of cedar and almond mix with a buttery character.

The brand was founded in 1882 by Ramón Allones, who wanted to add a top-quality cigar to his range. It was the successor to the King of the World, produced since 1842 by the German businessman Emilio Ohmstedt, and for a long time the most expensive Cuban cigar. The El Rey del Mundo cigars are long-filler premium cigars with a mild to medium aroma.

In the 1990s, the fame of El Rey del Mundo visibly faded, as the market increasingly demanded stronger cigars and only a few aficionados took the time to allow the cigars the necessary maturing time.

Today, only two formats from the brand's once rich portfolio are still in production. In addition, eight Edición Regional formats have been released so far.
