Spotlight on: Dunhill

Once a strong competition to Cohiba and Davidoff.

Alfred Dunhill was originally involved in the sale of automobile accessories. A "windshield pipe", with which one could smoke "with the nose in the wind", was his first accessory for the pleasure smoker. More pipes, cigars and cigarettes followed and finally, in 1928, the opening of the tobacco shop on Duke Street. Dunhill also imported Havannas: the brands Les Don Candido, Flor de Punto and Don Alfredo were made exclusively for Dunhill. Dunhill, like Davidoff, was able to continue producing its own brands after the Cuban Revolution. In 1977, Dunhill agreed with Cubatabaco to unite the various cigars under a single brand umbrella - "Dunhill". In the eighties, Cuba supplied Dunhill with the best qualities of tobacco, which gave Dunhill cigars a legendary reputation. The "end of the reign" of Alfred Dunhill was ushered in with the introduction of Cohiba. Fidel Castro did not want his new flagship to be overshadowed by foreign brands, so he cancelled the contracts with Dunhill in 1991, just as he had with Davidoff.

When Dunhill first settled as a serious brand, it had the purpose of competing with Davidoff, something that came to the beginning of the end because of strong disagreements between the British Company and Cubatabaco (they had previously signed a manufacturing contract in 1982). As a result of this disagreement, this contract was finished as mentioned in 1991 and the brand Dunhill was discontinued. Dunhill lived from 1984 to 1991. The most popular cigars produced by Dunhill could be Cabinetta, with medium strength and mixed balanced flavours such as fruits, honey and nuts, or Estupendos, similar to Cabinetta but richer in taste.
